Tour and Explore Trinidad and Tobago
Minister of Tourism, Dr the Honourable Rupert Griffith, launched this year’s Tour and Explore, with a call for nationals to reacquaint themselves with the beauty and heritage of Trinidad and Tobago.
Speaking at the launch, which was hosted at the Hyatt Regency on August 2, Dr Griffith said, “We need to discover Trinidad and Tobago ourselves so that each of us can utilise every opportunity to sell sweet T&T to visitors far and near.” “Word-of-mouth” he added, “is still the most powerful marketing tool when it comes to making holiday decisions.”
Trinidad and Tobago’s premiere tourism focused leisure and educational event, Tour & Explore 2011 is aimed at helping locals discover the beauty and heritage of Trinidad and Tobago, while raising the levels of tourism awareness through fun, educational and interactive experiences.
Chairman of the TDC, Mr. George Stanley Beard, explained that the event's purpose was to encourage nationals to become more aware and involved in Trinidad and Tobago's heritage. He added that the event was designed for all segments of the society, but placed a special emphasis on youth.
He noted that many children have not had the opportunity to experience local wonders such as Scarlet Ibis roosting in the Caroni Swamp, or a rainforest hike.“These young people will one day be the custodians of our environment. How can we expect them to value something that they have never experienced?" he said.
As the theme suggests, Tour and Explore, which evolved from the Tourism Park concept, aims to fill that gap. The tours, which kicked off on July 28th, aims to encourage exploration of local sites and attractions through specially designed tours - which are subsidized by the TDC and managed by the Trinidad and Tobago Incoming Tour Operators Association. The Event Hub, which kicks-off on August 12th at the Centre of Excellence, will feature a range of thrilling activities, including storytelling, cultural performances and one-on-one interactions with tourism stakeholders such as tour guides.
