Semester at Sea Returns to Port of Spain
PORT OF SPAIN: The Tourism Development Company hosted a Pan Yard Lime experience for the students and faculty of Semester at Sea (SAS), for the second consecutive year on Sunday 13th November, 2016 at the PCS Silver Stars Pan Yard in Port of Spain.
SAS, a study abroad programme aboard the World Odyssey cruise ship, first visited Port of Spain in November 2015. Over two hundred students and faculty representing thirty-two countries were treated to an authentic local pan yard experience at the event. The event incorporated key elements of Trinidad and Tobago’s culture including Carnival characters like the midnight robber, moko jumbies, masqueraders in costume, steelband performances by PCS Nitrogen Silver Stars, tassa drumming, the Laventille Rhythm Section and limbo dancers. The students and faculty also sampled homemade ice-cream, and other culinary staples like doubles, pelau, corn soup and pastelles.
The objective of the Pan Yard Lime was to provide an authentic experiential event in which the attendees could experience Trinidad and Tobago’s culture and cuisine with the aim of generating interest in the destination as a fun and welcoming holiday option and encouraging return visits.
For the duration of the semester, the ship docks at various ports around the world for one to two days, exposing students to authentic experiences within those destinations. The students participate in on-shore excursions and field classes while at the destination. Among the other activities the students and faculty participated in during their visit to Trinidad were:
- Tour of Paramin
- City Tour – Calypso/Storytelling in and around Port of Spain
- Tour of the Indian Museum
- Food Tour
- Tobago Day Trip
- North Coast Tour
- San Juan Market tour
- Marianne Waterfall Hike
- Caroni Bird Sanctuary
- Nariva Swamp and Bush Bush Wild Life Sanctuary
The World Odyssey departed Port of Spain for Peru on Monday 14th November 2016.
